First, I explored the site, Florida Memory: State Library and Archives of Florida. It was organized really nicely. I liked how there were different specific sections, so that users could find specific things easily. I particularly enjoyed the video section, which features hundreds of digitized videos and film footage. On the site there is a video titled Florida Folk Festival 1958 that was super cool and featured dance and song performances. It was nice to see how there was a variety of cultures represented in the festival, rather than just white Americans. There was another interesting video titled, Care and Feeding of a Mermaid which was made underwater, showing the process of young woman learning to be a mermaid at Weeki Wachee.
The second site I explored was Histories of The National Mall. It was divided into the categories, maps, explorations, people, and past events. I enjoyed scrolling through the people section and learning about various people connected to the mall’s past. One thing I found interesting was an exploration titled, Were people ever allowed to swim in the Tidal Basin or the Reflecting Pool? Although people were never allowed to swim in the Reflecting Pool, the article featured a photo of young kids swimming in 1926, noting that there weren’t many public pools in Washington, D.C at the time.
